An obsolete name for syphilis dating back to a time when that disease was believed to be have originated in a Latin country . Lues was also known as Morbus-Gallicus , Morbus-Hispanics , Morbus-Indicus . The word syphilis first appeared in 1530 in a poem by Girolamo Fracastoro Syphilis sive Morbus-Gallicus .
