Etymology: From the Greek ekdysis, moulting. Coined in the 1940s by journalist H . L. Mencken from the scientific term ecdysis (the act of molting or shedding) in response to a request from stripper Georgia Sothern (or Gipsy Rose Lee) who wanated a classier job-title.
