A generic term for gays and lesbians, one of many terms proposed as a substitute for homosexual by people who felt that word was etymologically bias and confusing since homo can mean same or man , in which case it excludes women. Other terms suggested include: controsexual ; feminosexual (as opposed to homo , men); herosexual ; homophile ; intersexual ; isosexual ; simulsexual .
ETYMOLOGY: Proposed by Edward Carpenter in the 19 th century.
