The fuck you! gesture, also known as: the big-bird / the finger / the middle-finger-salute / the toby-finger-(salute) / the toby-salute , and if you want to be obscure and Latinish: digitus-infamis . The middle-finger raised on a closed fist is an angry and obscene gesture saying: fuck you / up yours / take-it-in the ass. In The Beverly Hillbillies (1993) Uncle Jed (Jim Varney) and The Clampetts give passing motorists the birdie thinking it's a local custom: 'Let's give 'em a California howdy.'
