The middle-finger raised on a closed fist is an angry and obscene gesture saying: fuck you / up yours / take-it-in the ass. In The Beverly Hillbillies (1993) Uncle Jed (Jim Varney) and The Clampetts give passing motorists the birdie thinking it's a local custom: 'Let's give 'em a California howdy.'
