Or: herpes-simplex-virus / HSV , a common, highly infectious virus. There are two types, virus type I and II. HSV-I causes sores on or near the mouth (cold sores or oral herpes). HSV-II causes the genital sores (genital herpes). Most commonly, herpes simplex type I occurs above the waist, and type II occurs below the waist; however, both viral types can cause either genital or oral infections.
