herpes simplex virus:

1. A highly infectious virus. There are two types, virus type I and II. Type I herpes (oral herpes) is generally found on the the mouth and lips ; common cold sores are caused by Herpes Simplex I virus or HSV-I. Type I is much less serious then type II and is not considered an STD . Type II (genital herpes) is found more often on the genitalia . However, both viral types can cause either genital or oral infections.

2. When no type is specified, herpers refers to genital-herpes , a sexually-transmitted-disease as caused by Herpes Simplex Virus-Type II.
