Or: hack , obsolete, 18 th century, British term for a prostitute , derived from the standard meaning of a horse or mount that is for rent. Samuel Johnson in his Dictionary of the English Language (1755): ' To hack , to hackney: to turn hackney or prostitute .' A hackester , according to James T. Henke in Courtesans and Cuckolds.
