1. A highly infectious virus. There are two types, virus type I and II. Although both viral types can cause either genital or oral infections, Herpes Simplex I or HSV-I. (oral herpes; cold sores) is generally found on the the mouth and lips . It is much less serious then type II and is not considered an STD . Herpes Simplex II or HSV-II (genital herpes) is more often found on the genitalia .

2. When no type is specified, herpes refers to genital-herpes , a sexually-transmitted-disease caused by Herpes Simplex Virus-Type II.
